The first step in making a diaper cake is to gather the ingredients that you will need!

 

             I use 1 small bag of #3 diapers

                     1 small bag of #2 diapers

                     about 6-8 #1 diapers

 

                      Enough rubber bands for every diaper used

                      Ribbon of your chosen color

                      A stuffed animal for the top of the cake

                      Various decorations for around the cake

 

I start by unfolding the #3 diapers and rolling them up.  Secure with a rubber band.  Place a bottle of baby powder on a tray. This makes it easier to build the cake around the center.  Circle the baby powder with the diapers.  Secure this layer with a large rubber band.  Continue circling the diaper layer again.  Do this 3 times.  Wrap a large rubber band or ribbon around the bottom layer of the cake to secure.

 

  Do the same thing with the second layer of the cake using the #2 diapers.  Make this layer 2 rows thick.  Secure.

 

Continue with the top layer.  Use the #1 diapers.  You can tell if you need 1 or 2 rows of diapers.  Do what looks best for your cake.

 

Stack all layers to resemble a cake.  Wrap ribbon around the cake and secure.

Use an assortment of baby items to decorate around the cake.  I use rolled up receiving blankets or baby washclothes,  Teething rings, rattles, travel size bottles of baby lotions and powders, bibs, booties, hats, etc.  use your imagination.  It can be as inexpensive as you want it to be or as expensive.
